Painting Class Leads to Nonprofit Academic Career

"IU East changed my entire life," says Ruth Mills. And in fact, it is hard to imagine a more dramatic reversal of fortune. "When I started here," she explains, "I was 31, twice widowed, with three young children. I didn't know what to do with myself, so I started taking painting classes. This campus opened so many doors for me. Without my IU East degree, I wouldn't have my career."

The day after Mills completed her degree, she began her job as director of the Richmond Art Museum. She remained there for 17 years before joining WCTV, the Richmond public access station, in 1998. Her life continues to be intertwined with the university. She not only teaches a humanities course in public speaking as an adjunct professor, but is taking a course in metalsmithing.
